SDS control tool: navigate the latest changes in Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

19.02.2026

The LIFE FitForREACH-2 project is excited to announce a new control tool designed to help companies manage the transition to the updated Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements. This practical guide provides a clear comparison between previous and current regulations, ensuring your documentation remains compliant.

As of January 1st, 2023, all Safety Data Sheets must comply with the updated requirements set out in Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/878. To support chemical safety and compliance, the LIFE FitForREACH-2 team has developed a comprehensive comparison guide that maps out the changes between the old and new regulations.

What is the SDS Control Tool?
The tool is a practical, four-page guide that provides a section-by-section comparison between the previous Regulation (EU) 2015/830 and the current Regulation (EU) 2020/878. It highlights exactly what information needs to be added or updated in each section of the SDS.

Key Changes Highlighted:
The tool draws attention to critical updates, including:

  • Nanoforms and UFI codes: New requirements for product identifiers in Section 1.
  • Endocrine Disruptors (ED): Enhanced reporting requirements regarding endocrine disrupting properties in Sections 2, 3, 11, and 12.
  • Physical and Chemical Properties: Stricter requirements for describing physical states, colors, and odors in Section 9.
  • Specific Concentration Limits: More detailed information required for substances in mixtures (Section 3).
  • Transport Information: Updated requirements for UN/ID numbers and maritime transport (Section 14).

Who is it for?
This tool is essential for:

  • Companies that compile or update SDS for their products.
  • Downstream users who need to verify if the SDS they receive are up to date.
  • Environmental and safety managers overseeing chemical compliance.

Ensuring Safety and Compliance
Beyond technical details, the tool serves as a reminder that SDS must be prepared in the official language of the country where the substance or mixture is placed on the market, and must include the local emergency contact number.
